The folks at ARMA International have introduced an interesting new Records Management Certification program for SharePoint. It is delivered in person by Bruce Miller (RIMTech), who is a world-class expert on electronic record keeping. Bruce’s Managing Records in SharePoint 2010 book, also published by ARMA, is included in the two-day course, which takes you through Bruce’s 12-step methodology for implementing an Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) on the SharePoint platform.
One of the things I like about Bruce’s no-nonsense approach is that he just tells it like it is. This is not the same old “vendor speak” you may be used to. You can tell that Bruce is really committed to helping you understand the underlying issues and challenges to implementing an EDRMS successfully.
The other thing I like is his focus on the importance of changing the culture of an organization to support better record keeping. Too often, companies assume that simply by installing new software their users will immediately conform to the new “state of the world” and suddenly their record keeping nightmare will be over. As Bruce so rightly points out, this is almost never the case. What is needed is a complete overhaul of the way we create and interact with information on a daily basis.
